Trédi destroys 5,000 bottles of nitrous oxide that were seized by security forces

At its facility in Saint-Vulbas, in the Ain department, Trédi, a subsidiary of the Séché Environnement Group, received a shipment of 5,000 bottles of nitrous oxide seized by the authorities. At the request of government authorities, the company developed a technical solution in record time to destroy this hazardous waste under conditions of maximum safety.

A Major Operation Entrusted to Trédi
A shipment that is becoming increasingly common recently arrived at Trédi’s Saint-Vulbas facility: 5,000 bottles of nitrous oxide, seized by law enforcement as part of the fight against the illegal trafficking of this substance. To destroy them under conditions that ensure both safety and environmental protection, government authorities needed a specialist in the thermal treatment of hazardous waste.
Recognized expertise in the treatment of industrial gases
Thanks to its dedicated Special Gases Workshop, Trédi has developed valuable expertise in the treatment of end-of-life industrial gas cylinders. Its specially trained teams are capable of emptying the cylinders and incinerating the hazardous or greenhouse gases they contain at very high temperatures. The metal cylinders are then recovered for reuse or recycling, in line with the principles of the circular economy.
But even for these specialists, quickly processing 5,000 cylinders of just 2 liters each was no small feat. Demonstrating remarkable responsiveness, they devised the organizational structure and technical solutions needed to handle this unprecedented volume of “proto” cylinders in record time.
Nitrous oxide, a substance diverted from its original use
This operation takes place against a backdrop of health and societal concerns. Long used in the medical field as a pain reliever and in cooking as a propellant, nitrous oxide (N₂O) is a perfectly legal substance. But for several years now, it has been misused, and its consumption in the form of “laughing gas” balloons has spread dramatically. So much so that the use of “nitrous oxide” or “balloons” is now recognized as a genuine public health problem.
Once used or when they still contain residual gas, nitrous oxide cylinders are classified as hazardous waste. As such, they cannot be disposed of with household waste or through conventional metal recycling channels: they must be handled by certified facilities capable of processing them under conditions that ensure public safety and environmental protection.
In addition to this health concern, there is an operational challenge well known to waste management professionals. Too often abandoned on public roads or improperly sorted, used cylinders are causing increasingly frequent incidents: when they accidentally end up in incinerators, they cause explosions that can result in considerable property damage and significant maintenance costs.
At Séché Environnement, all divisions have had to take measures to address the scourge of “proto”:
- For used cylinders that normally end up at recycling centers, Triadis—the specialist in sorting and consolidating hazardous waste—has had to set up a dedicated facility to vent residual gas and then separate the plastic components from the metal cylinders to facilitate recycling.
- For those that accidentally end up in waste-to-energy plants, our teams are forced to step up maintenance operations.
Trédi has found solutions for a new stream: that of full cylinders confiscated from participants in a rapidly growing illegal trade.
